Royal Institution Christmas Lectures
CLIENT: Channel 4
YEAR: 2000 - 2001
ROLE: Concept Development, Web Development, Design, Programming
FEATURES: Director, Html
The Royal Institution Christmas lectures were started by Michael Faraday in 1820 when organised education was scarce. Their aim is to teach science to young people in an exciting way. Many world-famous scientists have given the lectures, which in 2000 / 2001 were televised on Channel 4.
Working as part of a team of people from media agency Okupi, we created the accompanying websites for the lectures, two years in a row.
The first website is about Robots and was presented by Professor Kevin Warwick with educational content supplied by Glasshead TV. Our role was to come up with an attention-grabbing activity that would get people enthused about the subject matter. The result was the Robot Constructor – a shockwave game that lets users build a robot and test it on a bespoke terrain. Initially users were also able to save and upload their terrains for others to try out.
The second website is about Genetics. We were fortunate enough to be able to consult Sir John Sulston about the ideas we had. Again we used Director to create two interactive educational activities: Bug Lab is a cruelty-free way to experiment on insects to record the effect that the environment has on genotype and Chromosome 11 turns the user into a genetic detective as they follow clues in a family tree to work out whether or not a baby is likely to have Sickle Cell Anaemia.
We are proud to have been part of such a long-standing lecture series and enjoyed collaborating with leading scientists to create the activities.
