Jam Literacy AR

CLIENT: BBC
YEAR: 2006
ROLE: Interaction Design, Research and Development
FEATURES: AR, C++, VRML

Jam Literacy AR looked at new approaches to teaching story telling to children of ages 5 to 7.

The BBC Creative R&D team worked with author Rob Lewis to find ways that Augmented Reality (AR) could be used to create playful narratives using interactions between characters, and by manipulating virtual objects. Two stories “Looking for the Sun”, and “Little Feet and Big Feet” were trialled at schools across the UK.

Building on our previous AR work we experimented with ways of combining screen based GUIs with traditional AR navigation systems. This enabled us to integrate story listening and reading activities with the interactive play, and to improve usability.

We developed a variety of AR interactions that expressed story episodes through acting out physical actions with the characters and objects. These activities were designed to encourage problem-solving and collaborative learning.

The project was a success at BETT 2006, receiving much press coverage. An evaluation was completed by Hitlab NZ, which assessed the learning potential of different types of AR activity, and which fed into subsequent research.
