We worked with Illumina to produce a Flash version of a board game that they had produced for the DfES Success For All scheme, teaching over-16s about database design. This was potentially a rather boring subject so the aim was to make something interesting and fun as well as informative.
The activity was based around the idea of a shop. Each customer that came through the door set a new task such as “I'd like to buy some shoes for under £30”. The User had to sort through a set of product cards and make suggestions to the customer who then gave feedback on the suitability of the product and the time it took to find it.
Users soon discovered that it was difficult to respond to the customer's needs unless the cards were organised in some way and this led on to a discussion about effective database design.
Illumina produced many other resources which were then distributed free of charge on Cd-Roms to colleges across the country.
