BBC Blast inspires and supports creativity in 13 to 19 year olds through online resources and tools as well as offline tours with the Blast truck. It helps young people to develop skills that enable them to turn their creative ideas into a reality.
Blast was one of the first adopters of Web 2.0 functionality at the BBC with its User Generated Content (UGC) Showcases, rating system and comments.
We have been working with the BBC Blast team since 2005 when we were asked to design and build the micro-site for Milo's “Gameplan Competition”. Following on from this, Zupa have been regularly involved with the Blast website.
When the site was re-branded, we re-designed the Showcases following the new style guide. We advised on the design of the Single Sign On (SSO) area of the site as we have a lot of experience with SSO from working on Boost. Zupa were also asked to source photos to illustrate articles and we used many of our own photographs.
Recently Jasia spent a couple of months at Blast HQ as Producer for a research and development project. The main task was to connect internal BBC teams with the external production team who were based in Manchester. It meant opening up discussions with many BBC departments such as Editorial Policy, Mobile, DNA, SSO and Research. Jasia worked closely with all of these teams to fully research the feasibility of the proposed project and as a result we learned a lot about UGC, moderation, Web 2.0 tools and information security.
Jasia was invited along to the 2007 Blast Away Day to brainstorm new ideas for the website. It was a very enjoyable day and everyone came up with some great proposals. We'll have to wait and see if they make it to the website...
