Augmented Reality

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology which allows users to interact with virtual 3D objects, by using their own hands, rather than a mouse or a keyboard.

AR works by mixing the live video from a webcam with animated 3D models, which are made to appear in the hands of the user. This is achieved by software which tracks bar-code like 'markers', printed on paper, in the webcam image.

Since 2005 we have developed a number of AR projects for the BBC, researching the potential of the technology for education applications:
